South Dakota

"Under God the People Rule"

South Dakota is a vast, open state in the Midwest, known for its dramatic landscapes and rich cultural history. Much of the land is covered in rolling prairies, where grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with wildflowers and wildlife. Traveling west, the terrain shifts to the rugged, pine-clad Black Hills National Forest, a region steeped in both natural beauty and historical significance.

Within the Black Hills, two of the country’s most impressive monuments are carved directly into the granite peaks. Mount Rushmore National Memorial features the 60-foot faces of four iconic U.S. presidents—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln—symbolizing the nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation. Not far away stands the Crazy Horse Memorial, a massive, still-in-progress sculpture honoring the legendary Lakota leader Crazy Horse. This monument pays tribute to Native American history and culture, serving as a reminder of the region’s deep indigenous roots.

In addition to its famous monuments, South Dakota offers opportunities for outdoor adventure, from hiking and camping in the Black Hills to exploring the wide-open spaces of the prairies. The state’s unique blend of natural wonders and historical landmarks makes it a memorable destination for travelers.
